A river begins at its source, often high in the hills. Smaller streams called tributaries flow into it, and the place where two rivers meet is a confluence. In its middle course the river winds in wide bends called meanders. Near the sea it crosses a wide, flat floodplain and ends at its mouth, where it meets the sea.
