Classroom timer: a countdown for the board

Pick a preset or type a time, press Start, and the countdown fills the board in large digits with a bar that empties as time runs out. A sound plays when time's up, and you can pause and resume. Free, with no signup.

  2. Press Start, or Space. Press it again to pause, and once more to carry on.

  4. Press Fullscreen for big digits on the board, and turn the sound off for silent work.

Ways to use a timer in class

  • Starters: three minutes for the retrieval questions on the board.
  • Think time: one minute of silent thinking before anyone answers.
  • Timed writing: ten minutes of writing, with the time left in view.
  • Tidy-up: two minutes to clear the tables before the bell.
  • Group work: keep each stage of a task to time, so groups pace themselves.
  • Brain breaks: a one-minute break between tasks.
  • Exam practice: time a past paper question exactly.

Questions teachers ask

Does the timer make a sound at the end?

Yes, a short chime when time's up, unless you turn the sound off.

Can I pause it?

Yes. Press Start again to pause, and again to carry on from where it stopped.

Does it keep time if I switch tabs?

Yes. It counts from the clock, so it stays right while the tab is in the background.

Can I set any time?

Yes. Type minutes, like 5, or minutes and seconds, like 2:30, and press Enter.

Is it accessible?

Yes. It works with the keyboard alone, announces the time left each minute to screen readers, and says when time's up.

Make it a game

Timers pair well with games: a timed quiz, a team round on Team board, or a wheel of questions for the last five minutes.
