Paste your class list, choose how many teams you want, and press Make teams. The names are shuffled into groups whose sizes differ by one at most, and you can shuffle again until it suits the room. Free, with no signup.
Add names, choose how many teams, then press Make teams.
Everything you type stays in this browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, and no names go into links.
How to use it
- Paste your class list into the box, one name per line. It's kept in this browser for next time.
- Choose the number of teams, from 2 to 20.
- Press Make teams, or Enter in the number box. Press it again for a new shuffle.
- Press Fullscreen to show the teams on the board while everyone finds their group.
Ways to use random teams
- Quiz teams: make four teams, then play Team board, which keeps every team's score.
- Group projects: fresh groups for each project, so students work with different classmates.
- Think-pair-share: make teams of two for a quick pair discussion.
- Stations: one team per station, then rotate.
- PE and games: fair sides in seconds, with no captains choosing.
- Reading groups: mixed groups for a shared reading task.
- Debates: two teams, one for and one against.
Questions teachers ask
Are the teams even?
As even as the numbers allow: team sizes never differ by more than one.
How many teams can I make?
From 2 to 20, as long as there's at least one name per team.
Is my class list saved?
Yes, in this browser only, so it's ready next lesson. It's never sent anywhere.
Can I shuffle again?
Yes. Press Make teams again for a new random split.
Is it free?
Yes, free with no signup.
Make it a game
Once the teams are made, play a team game on one screen: Team board keeps a score for every team. Quiz and Group sort work well for teams too.
Turn your lists into games
